So I finished this pretty good book, and......
Hey all...Well, I finished reading this book a little while ago and while I was reading it a few things came to mind. In the book, one of the main characters was an....well, I forget what exactly they called it (he actually had several professions) but one of the things he did was travel the world and basically dig up treasures for viewing in places like museums. Yes, so he was in Egypt with his team. They were digging up the buried tombs of the people who lived in those ancient cities. This one tomb the book expounged upon happened to be one he'd been looking for his entire career. It was the tomb of a great, wealthy king. See, sometimes we bury our dead with items that hold sentimental value for us and/or our deceased, but rarely is anyone buried with a wealth of treasures to take with them into the next life. Well, not only do they bury these great men with an army of riches, they mummify the body and preserve it. So, my question/concern is this: Do we have the right to disturb these ancient traditions? Do we have the right to dig up what was so painstakening buried and preserved and then prompty put on display what was originally intended to remain buried? Yes, these items tell us much about the people of that day and age and yes many of these items are not only very valuable, but also beautiful, but should we disturb these customs, or rather, what was custom? If you buried your loved one with a ring and necklace that was pretty valuable as a whole, but also held sentimental value, how would it make you feel to know someone was going to come along and dig up the body to see what they could learn about the culture of the people of that time? Is it the same thing? Same concept? Or, because these people have been dead and gone so long, does it even matter? Hmmm....I just found it interesting......
